Healthcare access is a top-three concern for every S-MM2H applicant we onboard. The good news: Kuching''s private hospitals meet international standards at a fraction of Singapore or Sydney prices.
Top private hospitals
- Normah Medical Specialist Centre — flagship private hospital, most expat doctors, cardiology & oncology.
- Timberland Medical Centre — modern facility, strong orthopaedics and maternity.
- KPJ Kuching Specialist Hospital — national chain, straightforward billing.
Typical private costs (2026)
GP consult RM 60–100. Specialist consult RM 150–250. Standard blood panel RM 200. Overnight private ward RM 400–700. Cataract surgery RM 6,000–9,000. Coronary angiogram RM 4,500–6,500.
Mandatory S-MM2H health insurance
Every S-MM2H visa holder must carry Malaysian-recognised medical insurance. Expect RM 2,000 – 5,000 per adult per year up to age 65. Providers we routinely place clients with: Allianz Malaysia, AIA, Great Eastern, Zurich. Premiums roughly double at 66+.
Public healthcare — the safety net
Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) is the government tertiary hospital. S-MM2H holders can use it at foreigner rates (still cheap by global standards), but private hospitals are strongly preferred for wait times.
Ambulance & emergency
Dial 999. Normah and Timberland run their own private ambulance services (RM 250–500 per call in-city).
Pharmacies
Guardian and Watsons are on every mall floor. Chronic-condition medication is 40–60% cheaper than Australia or the UK. Bring 3 months of prescription with a doctor''s letter to switch smoothly.

FAQ
Are pre-existing conditions covered?
Usually with a 12–24 month waiting period. Declare everything up front — undisclosed conditions void the entire policy.
Can I keep my home-country insurance?
Only if it explicitly covers Malaysia and meets S-MM2H minimum sums insured. Most policies don''t; a local top-up is standard.
