Kuching Weather & the Rainy Season: What S-MM2H Newcomers Need to Know

TL;DR: Everything Sarawak MM2H arrivals should know about Kuching's climate — monsoon months, temperature range, flood-prone neighbourhoods, and how to plan travel and property choice around the wet season.

Kuching sits on the equator with a warm, humid, tropical rainforest climate. Understanding the rhythm — especially the November–February monsoon — makes the difference between a magical first year and a soggy one.

Temperature — remarkably steady

Daytime highs sit at 30–33°C year-round, nights drop to 23–25°C. Humidity averages 80%. You will run air-conditioning at night; budget RM 250–450/month in electricity for a 2-bed condo.

The wet season (Nov – Feb)

The northeast monsoon brings the heaviest rain, usually as afternoon or overnight downpours rather than all-day drizzle. December and January are the wettest — 500+ mm each month. Flash flooding hits low-lying areas of Padungan, Rock Road and Petra Jaya about 1–3 times per season.

Dry-ish months (Jun – Sep)

Still tropical, but rain drops to short bursts. This is the ideal window to move house, host visiting family, or explore Bako, Mulu and the highlands.

Choosing property around the weather

Air quality — the haze question

Sarawak is largely spared from the Indonesian slash-and-burn haze that hits Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore — one of the underrated wins of choosing Kuching over KL. On rare bad-air days (usually Aug–Sep), API stays below 100 in Kuching versus 200+ in KL.

What to pack

Linen, cotton, quick-dry activewear, one light rain jacket, and good sandals. Leave heavy sweaters at home — you''ll only wear them on airline flights.
